Bird and Turtle Watching

Nature

Bird and Turtle Watching can be extremely fulfilling in Dalyan.  There are 4 species of Turtle and a wide variety of birdlife.  The environment is immensely scenic and the early morning ethereal moments make the experience more than just bird watching.

Bird Watching

Boat trips start with a warm drink and breakfast snack and then sneak through the inlets and reed beds in search of that surprise species, or disturb a huge flock or stop for a tranquil moment watching feeding time.  Binoculars and bird book are provided aswell as the expertise spotting of Captain Tufan.

Bird watching is different at all times of the year, young can be seen in Spring Time (7am start), local species in Summer Time (6.30am start) and there are large numbers of water birds in Autumn/Winter (7am start again).  And that elusive penduline tit is always a challenge. The trip is approximately 2 hours. The boat will cut engines in strategic places in and around Koycegiz Lake with moments under the mountains being extra special. These trips can often reinvent the atmosphere in the African Queen.

Bird Specialties can include Penduline Tits, Kingfishers and White Throated Kingfishers, Rollers, Blue Rock Thrushes, Red footed Falcons, Bee eaters, Ravens, Blue Throats, Cirl Buntings, Reed Warblers, Robins, Spotted Flycatchers, Black Storks, Flamingos, Lesser Kestrels, Cormorants, Heron (various).

Turtle Watching / Blue Crabs

Turtle Watching starts at 10.00am and takes approximately one hour - there are 4 types of Turtles, the famous Caretta (Loggerhead) Turtles (moving from the sea into the river for food) , Caspian Turtles, Nile Softback River Turtles (often referred to as Pinocchio Turtles!) and Terrapins. Turtles pass under the rock tombs and swim in Babyliss’s tears and drift amongst her hair, making for picturesque photos (mythological story - interested?). In addition Blue crabs can be spotted - working out males/females can be a chuckling sideline!  (longer trips can be arranged for all 4 types)
